Wouter Feys - Coastbikes & co

Having worked for a go-cart hirer in Knokke-Heist during his holidays, Wouter Feys decided to take the plunge himself. And he’s none the worse for it! ‘I have been bitten by all things go-carting.’

I like to call myself an honorary West Fleming. I grew up inland but, come holiday time, we always headed for the seaside. The Belgian Coast was my playground and I never had to be asked twice to take part in a sandcastle-building competition. Now and again our parents would allow us to hire a go-cart and we would be beside ourselves with joy!

Around the age of sixteen I got myself a summer job at a go-cart rental business in Knokke-Heist and, before long, I was hooked. I combined my summer job with my studies but soon it became clear that I wanted to go into the go-cart rental business. I looked around for a going concern I could take over and that’s how my wife and I ended up in Middelkerke, on the promenade. 15 years have passed since then.

The previous owners were born into the go-carting business. The De Jonghe Family had been running the company since the 30s. Originally a garage, they developed it into a bike and go-cart rental business. My own parents were teachers, so I most certainly didn’t inherit the go-carting gene from them.

And yet, I’ve been bitten by all things go-carting. Inventing, building, repairing, all these aspects enthral me.

And I have never been afraid of hard work, especially if it involves a steering wheel and wheels. So, these go-carts really allow me to do my thing.

Every year, I try to come up with something new. I don’t always succeed but am never fazed by a challenge. Competing against all those electronic carts, bicycles and scooters from China with your own design is a different ballgame altogether. Mind you, I don’t let it get to me.

Personally, I have a soft spot for retro go-carts. You’re talking real works of art here, put together with the greatest care and precision. They kept their builders out of harm’s way for days, not to mention weeks, on end. Unbreakable carts that could take a knock or two, each one of them unique, the seat of one doesn’t fit the other. And they were entirely made of metal.

I still have a few retro go-carts in my garage. They are my pride and joy. There is nothing to top that quality.
