Exhibition Operation North Sea 1944 - '45

Lost a shoe, anyone?

You wouldn’t be the first to lose a shoe or flip-flop on the beach. Things could be worse, and you never know, someone might actually find it at some stage, covered in mussels. The story of this unfortunate shoe is rather more tragic. It was found in the wreckage of a ship that sank during the Second World War. Dozens of ships from those days still lie on the seabed off the Belgian Coast. They are well and truly rusted by now and swarming with sea creatures.

75 years after the Battle of the Scheldt was fought, Exhibition Operation North Sea 1944-’45 shows you a tiny piece of that underwater heritage and of what is being done to protect it.
