Did you know that the Canadian soldiers - who liberated the coastal region - loved Flanders?
It had taken months of fighting to advance. When they got to Flanders, they were finally able to make headway and they were welcomed enthusiastically.
The results were not long in coming. In 1945, 649 Belgian (mainly Flemish) brides accompanied their sweethearts back to Canada. By then, already 131 children had been born to Canadian fathers.
