Vlaams Natuurreservaat Houtsaegerduinen
The Flemish nature reserve of Houtsaeger Dunes and Kerkepanne Forest (covering 86 hectares in total) is enclosed between the residential areas of De Panne and St Idesbald. The previously rather open and moist dune area is now very dry and overgrown with natural dune thickets (shrubs and young trees) and still has remnants of the former grasslands and moss dunes.
Most old dune fields have been planted with forest trees. The management is focusing on maintaining the varied landscape by grazing domestic livestock that have been present there historically (including donkeys).
