Artistic spots in Knokke-Heist
In Knokke-Heist, you will be sure to come across the various artworks. There are of course the galleries, some sixty of them, that are displaying the best of their best, but other memorable works are to be found in the dunes, on the seafront, in the Casino, on numerous squares and even on a jetty. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled!
4 Monoliths by Ulrich Rückriem
Ulrich Rückriem was originally a stonemason, but today his technique of cutting and splitting stone along straight lines is the distinguishing feature of Rückriem’s Minimal Art. These four colossal blocks, carved out of Austrian granite rock, together weigh 48 tonnes and adorn the end of the Graaf Léon Lippensdreef. The visible gaps and cracks are traces of his working method. The proportions follow mathematical principles and, despite their scale, are in seamless harmony with the location. A puzzle of four large pieces that can be brought back together into a single whole.
Heads / Lemurs by Franz West
On the Rubensplein, you can see the unusual work by Franz West: heads made of a primary mass of synthetic resin, placed on pedestals. Thanks to their tiled pedestals and the synthetic resin, they can withstand storms, erosion by sand and bright light.
Beaufort gems in Knokke-Heist
Beach Castle, 2018
A tower made of beach cabins - the quickest way to describe this work. When you drive into van Knokke-Heist, you immediately see the artwork by Jean-François Fourtou. The entire work is very unusual and certainly worth taking a look!
Fluid Axis, 2018
For this work you have to head to the garden of the Cultuurcentrum Scharpoord. It consists of stairs that lead to a water fountain that by nature keeps changing its shape. That makes the work different and exciting. Well worth a look!

A fisherman’s friend
An unusual work by the Belgian artist Peter Rogiers. The figure looks like it is emerging from the dark water dripping with swamp mud. De title of the work is a nod to the well-known throat pastilles.

Labyrinth And Pleasure Garden #23
An artist who designs gardens and turns them into veritable works of art. The artist Jan Vercruysse has worked for Beaufort in the past the IJzerpark.
Hospitality van Barry Flanagan
In the dunes at the end of the seafront, a hare suddenly pops up. Or, as the residents of Knokke like to call it, ’t keun. An artwork that represents freedom, independence, dynamism, fruitfulness, strength and individuality. And although it is mainly rabbits that you will encounter here, The Hare fits in perfectly with these desert dunes.
Scharpoord and artistic mosaic benches
This cultural centre houses not only the public library but is also a space where major exhibition are often held. Think for example of the annual, highly regarded Photo festival. In the garden of the cultural centre, you will see 15 artistic mosaic benches. In the past, these were dotted around the city, but now they make up a fine ensemble in this green oasis.
The Casino of Knokke-Heist has more to offer than just its games of chance. All year round you can enjoy performances, exhibitions, parties and other fine events. In addition, you can come here to admire a number of remarkable artworks. For example, the world’s largest chandelier hangs here, made of more than seven tonnes of Venetian crystal, and you will also discover frescoes by Keith Haring and Paul Delvaux and an enchanting wall painting by René Magritte.
Knokke-Heist abounds in galleries. The city has more than 60 such temples of art, so you are spoilt for choice. You can see work by domestic and international artists and are welcome to go in and browse. You will find every style, price category and level.
Tomorrow Man made by the sea by Cathérine François
On the jetty at the level of the Bréartstraat, you can’t miss this work by Cathérine François. You will see a bowed figure, 2 metres high and weighing about 400 kilos, braving the rising water. In other words, the struggle between humanity and nature. The statue is exposed to the elements and the ebb and flow, sun, wind and rain have left their mark.
The museum of the Zwin region houses a schoolhouse dating from 1899 and takes you back through 2000 years of the turbulent history of the region. You will find out all about the tough daily life of the Heist fishers and their families, and via customized treasure hunt children can explore the museum on their own.
